Naples, the area of the shooting
Naples – Forcella is once again facing the sound of gunfire. At 4:30 a.m., the Carabinieri responded to Vicoletto Zuroli, in the heart of Naples' historic center, after a series of gunshots were reported. When officers arrived, they found seven shell casings near number 4.
No one was injured, and, at least in the initial investigations, no damage was found to doors, windows, facades, or other buildings. This detail leaves the reconstruction of the incident unclear: it's unclear whether the shots were fired in the air, whether they were aimed at a specific target, or whether it was an act of intimidation.
Investigators will now need to determine, above all, where the shots came from and who the possible target was. Surveys conducted in the area may also provide useful information on the type of weapon used and the trajectory of the bullets.
Investigators are also examining images from any video surveillance systems in the area, which are essential in trying to reconstruct the movements of the shooter.
For now, therefore, there is insufficient evidence to definitively speak of a "sweeping operation." The number of shell casings and the time of the raid, however, are factors that are drawing investigative attention in a neighborhood where shootings have been one of the most visible signs of criminal tensions for years.
The latest incident comes after the July shooting in Forcella, when shots were fired near Piazzetta Sedil Capuano, and a bullet struck the window of a B&B. A foreign tourist was inside, unharmed. Investigations had linked the incident to the ongoing criminal tensions in the historic center, with the possibility of a show of force linked to the balance of power in drug dealing hubs.
It's no coincidence, then, that every new report of gunfire in Forcella is carefully assessed. In recent months, the historic center has been affected by a series of incidents involving firearms. In June, the wider area between Montesanto, Pignasecca, and the Spanish Quarter saw several shootings in just a few days, culminating in the incident involving a Kalashnikov in Montesanto, which investigators described as a "sweep."
Vicoletto Zuroli, moreover, is no stranger to shootings. In November 2017, shots were fired between Vico Zuroli and Via Vicaria Vecchia, and spent shell casings were found. At the time, investigators linked the incident to tensions between criminal groups vying for control of illicit activities in the city center.
And the name Forcella inevitably evokes the tragedy of Annalisa Durante, the fourteen-year-old killed in March 2004 by a stray bullet during a shootout between criminals. This incident remains in the neighborhood's memory as the most dramatic symbol of the risk posed by firearms fired in the streets.
This time, fortunately, there were no casualties or damage. But seven shell casings left in the dead of night are still a warning that investigators cannot ignore.
The central question remains: who was the target of those shots? Whether it was a shooting, an intimidation attempt, a failed ambush, or a shooting that unfolded within a criminal network yet to be deciphered, will be determined by the Carabinieri's investigation.
