The authorities of the Democratic Republic of Congo they arrested the alleged assassins of the Italian ambassador to Kinshasa, Luca Attanasio, killed last February 22 in the province of North Kivu.
The Congolese police authorities announced this today at a press conference held in Goma, in which they also specified that one of the detainees, believed to be the person who shot the ambassador, managed to escape. According to reports, the kidnappers were demanding 1 million dollars as a ransom in exchange for his kidnapping, which later failed. Together with Attanasio the Italian carabiniere were killed Victor Iacovacci and the World Food Program (WFP) driver Mustafa Milambo.
Six young people ended up in handcuffs and have now been transferred to the prisons in Goma, on the border with Rwanda. They are said to be part of three distinct criminal gangs (of the infinite number that operate in the region) even if the person who actually committed the crime is still on the run, a member of a gang known as “Aspirant”.
The local police assure, however, that the alleged killer's hours are numbered, that the circle is closing around him. It must be said that caution is still required as the story still presents several dark points and that in the past months, the Congolese police had already announced possible arrests that were later denied. Therefore, whether this is the right turning point is probably still too early to say.
