INGV celebrates its twenty-fifth anniversary since its establishment

The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology ( INGV ) is celebrating the twenty-fifth anniversary of its establishment with a series of events that will take place until June 2025.

Established in 1999, its task is to study and monitor geophysical phenomena such as earthquakes and volcanoes in Italy and the Mediterranean Sea and to promptly provide institutions with information and support for the management and prevention of natural risks.

The celebrations will be inaugurated on October 7, 2024, from 14.30:XNUMX p.m., with an institutional day at the Senate, in the presence of ministers and other authorities, as well as the most important figures who participated in the birth of the Institute.

The institutional day at the Senate "aims to represent the main focus of a journey that, in this first quarter of a century, has seen the INGV become a world reference point in scientific research on the study of Planet Earth".

The event will be an opportunity "to reflect on the progress made by the Institute in the field of seismic and volcanic research and monitoring, forecasting and prevention of natural risks, studies in the environmental sector and scientific dissemination.

In addition, the large “Earth Telescope” project that projects the INGV research into the future will be presented to the public. The initiatives will continue in Catania the following day, October 8, 2024 (from 15 pm) at the Etna Observatory of the Institute, with the event “25 years of geosciences for society”.

During the day, the naming of the Etna Observatory headquarters after Alfred Rittmann (1893-1980) will be celebrated, and the photographic exhibition “The land of the poor Christians. The 1968 earthquake in Belice” will be inaugurated, with photos by Mondadori reporters Mario De Biasi, Sergio Del Grande, Giorgio Lotti and Alberto Roveri “who managed to capture on film the light of the emotions of the earthquake victims of Belice, making Italy discover the incredible reality of a piece of the country that seemed to belong to the past”.

The celebrations will continue until June 2025 with a series of events organized in all the Italian offices of the INGV. Rome, Naples, Catania, Milan, Bologna, Pisa, Grottaminarda, Palermo, Genoa, Lerici, Ancona, L'Aquila, Nicolosi: each office will be the protagonist of unique events open to the public, including: scientific workshops focused on the current and future challenges of geophysics, with the participation of world-class scientists; international seminars organized by the INGV magazine "Annals of Geophysics" that will bring together experts from different countries on the progress made and the latest scientific discoveries.

Unpublished publications that will tell the story and the goals of the geosciences, but also the new frontiers of scientific research; and dissemination activities for the general public, with particular attention to schools and young people, with the aim of raising awareness among the new generations on the knowledge and protection of our planet.
