Acerra, child killed by pitbull: investigators open inquiry. Parents heard

Acerra – Investigators from the Nola Prosecutor's Office have opened an investigation into the 9-month-old baby killed by a pit bull.

The investigators have ordered the seizure, autopsy and tests on the dog. The little girl's father explained to the investigators that he had fallen asleep with his daughter and that he had then found her, upon awakening, lifeless and covered in blood. The little girl's mother, however, was not at home at the time of the crime but at work.

The two were heard as persons informed of the facts and the prosecutor's office, as required, will register them in the register of suspects for the autopsy to be carried out, after which they can be heard in the presence of a lawyer.

According to some residents of the area, the dog had already shown its dangerousness by attacking another dog on the street last summer.

Today, Acerra wakes up to a grave loss that has affected the entire community. A tragedy that was perhaps avoidable and which must be clarified as soon as possible to determine any responsibility.

We have long been warning that many people buy these dogs, which we call 'special', without having the slightest competence and knowledge of how they should be raised, bred, cared for in complete safety for their families and the people they meet. There are strict behavioral rules that must be observed but too often they are ignored by owners who are unfit to handle these dogs.

Taking it out on animals is too easy and does not help prevent similar tragedies. The truth is that a license issued by veterinary authorities would be needed with the obligation of periodic behavioral checks for those who own these dogs.

More controls are needed on the use of simple precautions like muzzles and leashes in crowded places with children. These things happen very rarely. Now is the time to respect the mourning, and we join in the family's grief." This is the comment of Alleanza Verdi Sinistra MP Francesco Emilio Borrelli and Europa Verde regional spokesperson Rosario Visone.
