High participation in strike at Ikea in Salerno: over 90%

The Ikea workers' strike in Salerno saw unprecedented turnout, with peaks of 90% and even 100% in some departments. This extraordinary turnout, notes the CGIL of Salerno, demonstrates how deeply the protest is felt by employees, tired of being subjected to corporate decisions that violate their dignity and rights.

“Today's strike in Salerno – it is underlined in a note – is part of a broader national mobilization plan, spread over several days for each store, with the exception of next March 15, when the strike will be joint throughout Italy.

The workers at the Baronissi store wanted to send a strong signal, demonstrating unity and determination in their request for fair treatment. After a year and a half of negotiations, the unions found themselves faced with a company that interrupted the negotiating table, leaving fundamental issues unresolved.

The failure to apply increases to new hires, the imposition of holiday work without adequate compensation and the devaluation of the professionalism of employees are just some of the issues that led to the protest.

Added to this is the exponential growth of part-time contracts without the possibility of hourly integration, which creates a precarious condition for many workers, forced to guarantee overtime without having adequate protections".

Maria Rosaria Nappa, general secretary of Filcams Cgil Salerno, underlined how today's strike was a strong signal for Ikea: “We are satisfied with the great participation in the mobilization.

This strike shows that workers will no longer accept compromises. Ikea has always promoted an image of a company that is attentive to people's needs, but today this narrative clashes with the reality of the facts. After long and tiring negotiations, we thought we were close to a signature, but instead the discussion was abruptly interrupted due to irreconcilable company positions on fundamental points.

Workers cannot pay the price of unilateral choices that do not take into account their dignity and their rights”. Today's protest is only a first step: the unions do not intend to stop until Ikea returns to the negotiating table with the will to find a fair agreement for everyone. Ikea Salerno workers have shown that they are united and determined, and the mobilization will continue until March 15 and beyond, until concrete answers are given.
