Scafati: Nine-year-old boy mauled by pitbull: "He's out of danger now."

Scafati – An afternoon like any other turned into a nightmare. A nine-year-old boy was attacked and mauled by a pit bull last night in Scafati, in the province of Salerno.

The boy, whose identity has not been released, was leaving his home when he came across the dog, which, although kept on a leash by the owner, was not muzzled.

The dynamics of the aggression

According to initial reports, the animal suddenly lunged at the child, biting his limbs. The injuries were serious, requiring emergency surgery.

Emergency medical personnel, who promptly arrived on the scene, provided first aid to the child and transported him first to the Umberto I Hospital in Nocera Inferiore. Given the complexity of the injuries, the child was then transferred to the Santobono Pediatric Hospital in Naples, a center of excellence, where he underwent surgery.

The little boy's condition and the mayor's visit

This morning, Scafati's mayor, Pasquale Aliberti, went to the hospital to visit the child and his family. "He is now out of danger," the mayor announced with relief in a statement.

"I conveyed the greetings and comfort of all the residents, who are concerned about his condition. I sincerely hope he can quickly recover, both physically and psychologically, from the trauma he has suffered."

The controversy and the call to respect the rules

In addition to words of comfort, Mayor Aliberti issued a stern warning, pointing the finger at the irresponsibility of some pet owners. "We often become more like beasts when there are rules and we don't respect them, or when we say we love animals but then have no respect for those around us," he stated bitterly.

He then recalled the provisions of the municipal regulations: "A leash and muzzle are mandatory whenever animals could cause harm or disturb others. In any case, public safety must be guaranteed. This avoidable tragedy demonstrates how vital those regulations are."

To prevent similar incidents from recurring, the mayor announced his intention to consider establishing "an operational unit dedicated to surveillance of the area, perhaps in collaboration with animal protection officers, who could also fine offenders for both excrement and failure to wear muzzles for large or aggressive dogs."

The incident reignites the ongoing debate over the responsible ownership of potentially dangerous dogs and the importance of rigorously enforcing existing ordinances, the only true safeguard for everyone's safety, especially the little ones.
