Naples – The trial for the so-called " Ercolano massacre " will begin on Monday, September 22, before the Naples Assize Court . This tragic explosion occurred on November 18, 2024, in Via Patacca, which claimed the lives of three very young people: Samuel Tafciù, just 18 years old, and twins Sara and Aurora Esposito, 26, originally from Marigliano.
Samuel left behind a five-month-old daughter, born from his relationship with 17-year-old Rosita Giorgetti. The Esposito sisters were also mothers of young girls. Three lives shattered and three families overwhelmed by irreparable grief.
The prosecutor's investigation
The investigation, coordinated by prosecutors Stella Castaldo and Giuseppe Toscano, has reconstructed a dramatic picture: inside an illegal building, lacking any authorization or security measures, homemade bombs and illegal explosives were being manufactured.
A clandestine activity conducted – according to the prosecution – by Pasquale Punzo , Vincenzo D'Angelo and Raffaele Boccia, with manpower recruited under exploitative conditions, paid just 20 euros a day “under the table”.
The charges are extremely serious: intentional homicide, gangmastering, possession and manufacturing of explosives, as well as a long list of workplace health and safety violations.
The Prosecutor's Office, convinced of the solidity of the evidence gathered, obtained an immediate trial: the prosecution's case remained standing until the committal for trial.
The battle in the courtroom
The defendants' defense has requested a summary trial, a move that, if granted, would result in a reduced sentence if convicted. Preliminary Investigating Judge Federica Girardi of the Naples Court will decide, in a chamber hearing, on the admissibility of the trial and on the victims' families' requests to join the case as civil parties.
The civil parties are represented by the lawyers Massimo Viscusi, Nicoletta Verlezza, Angelo Melone, Alessandra Cassandra and Ferdinando Letizia.
A pain that doesn't go away
In Ercolano and Marigliano, the memory of that night is still vivid: a powerful explosion that shattered the silence and destroyed innocent lives. Today, the cry for truth and justice remains, shouted by the families and an entire community that has not forgotten.
"Justice for Samuel, Sara, and Aurora" is the slogan accompanying the trial, a symbol of a massacre that has shocked consciences and dramatically refocused attention on security, illegal labor, and the criminal carelessness with which people sometimes play with their lives.
The news of the Herculaneum massacre is truly tragic and deeply affecting. It's unacceptable that people are working in these dangerous conditions, without any safety features. I hope justice will take its course.
