Castellammare, 48-year-old man suspended in mid-air: rescued by Carabinieri

It's 6:18 a.m. in Pozzano, the stretch of road connecting Castellammare di Stabia and the Sorrento peninsula. The road is almost deserted when some runners, taking advantage of the first light of day, hear a desperate cry.
The voice is clear, but its origin remains a mystery: above them looms a rocky cliff.

The alarm and the arrival of help

The call to 112 was made immediately. Within a few minutes, a Carabinieri patrol arrived on the scene, with the commander of the Sorrento Company and his driver, followed by a patrol car from the Castellammare Radiomobile Unit.
The soldiers identified the source of the screams: a man was balanced on a rock outcrop, hundreds of meters from the road.

The risk of an extreme gesture

A 48-year-old man from Vico Equense has been missing for about three days. He's been threatening to jump.
The situation is critical, time is running out. The Carabinieri begin an extremely complex approach, navigating improvised paths, unstable terrain, and rocks falling from the rock face.

Rescue “in an embrace”

As they approached, the soldiers spoke to the man, attempting to reassure him and calm him down. Once they reached him, they held him in what appeared to be a full-blown embrace.
A precarious balance: one wrong move could have dragged everyone into the ravine.
For over thirty minutes, the scene remains suspended, with three lives clinging to one, while the 48-year-old continues to repeat phrases of despair.

The intervention of the Fire Brigade and the happy ending

The arrival of the Fire Brigade was crucial, as they managed to harness the man and secure him.
The 48-year-old was then entrusted to the 118 staff and transported to the Maresca hospital in Torre del Greco.

Without the intervention of the Carabinieri, and without that support, not only physical but also human, the outcome could have been very different.
