Di Lauro Clan: All 14 arrested freed

The Naples Court of Review has ordered the immediate release of fourteen suspects involved in the investigation into drug trafficking linked to the Di Lauro clan, an operation that led to numerous arrests just a few weeks ago.

The precautionary order was overturned by the Court of Appeal, who deemed that the grounds and, above all, the relevance required to maintain custody in prison were no longer met.

The time factor at the center of the legal debate

The crucial point of the decision, as reported by Il Roma, lies in the considerable time gap between the alleged events and the implementation of the restrictive measures. The alleged crimes, in fact, date back to 2020, while the judicial action took place approximately six years later. This discrepancy was raised by the defense team—composed of lawyers Luca Mottola, Claudio Davino, Mauro Zollo, Antimo Verde, Raffaele Pucci, and Carlo Ercolino—who argued that the passage of time had eliminated the need for precautionary measures, a view shared by the Review Board.

The DDA investigation: details of the charges

The investigation, coordinated by the DDA and conducted by the Carabinieri of the Naples Investigative Unit between 2020 and 2023, aimed to target an alleged drug dealing syndicate operating in the neighborhoods of Secondigliano, Vasto, and Arenaccia. According to investigators, the organization, led by figures such as Francesco Amelio (known as "'o pirata") and Raffaele Paolo (known as "'o rockets"), obtained regular supplies through international channels linked to Albanian drug trafficking groups, moving large quantities of cocaine and hashish.

The developments of the procedure

Although the investigation had reconstructed the group's dynamics in detail and led to the seizure of several shipments of drugs, the Court of Review's decision recast the operation's outcome. Of the fifteen people originally involved—one of whom died in the intervening period—fourteen have been released.

The measure inevitably highlights the sensitive timing of judicial investigations, raising questions about the impact that a delay in the execution of precautionary measures could have on the effectiveness of the fight against organized crime.
