Naples Metro: Twelve-week disruption between Montedonzelli and Piscinola

Naples – Metro Line 1's northern section has been shut down for nearly three months. From Monday, June 22nd to Sunday, September 14th, the stations between Montedonzelli and Piscinola will be closed to allow for track maintenance.

This project follows the one completed last summer on the other track and will also include underground utilities where necessary. The work is partially funded by National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) funds and will be concentrated during the off-peak period due to school closures.

To mitigate the impact on residents of the northern area, the Neapolitan Mobility Company (ANM) will launch a replacement bus service with 12 shuttle buses. ANM Director General Francesco Favo announced the news during a meeting of the council's Mobility Committee chaired by Aniello Esposito. "The service will be the same one we implemented last year," Favo explained, "and we've seen great satisfaction from users."

The manager added, however, that "it will be necessary to have a plan and a stable replacement service, because when we reach 16 trains in operation on Line 1 – currently 10-11 run – maintenance will also have to be increased."

The meeting, attended by the Municipality's Transport Area Manager, Serena Riccio, and Councilor Edoardo Cosenza, highlighted the importance of the metro in regional public transport: ANM covers 40 percent of the service, and Line 1 alone accounts for 20 percent.

Another issue addressed is the expiration of ANM's in-house contract, set for June 30, 2026. Cosenza reiterated "the administration's firm intention not to put the service out to tender," while clarifying that "this is not a political act, but follows antitrust laws: we must be able to demonstrate that the in-house service is more effective and cost-effective than a tender."
