Cavalleggeri Ambush: Breakthrough After 11 Years: Rodolfo Zinco's Killer Caught

A full-blown execution, carried out eleven years ago on the pavement of Cavalry Aosta. A Camorra cold case reached a decisive turning point today at dawn. Carabinieri from the Naples Investigative Unit have placed the handcuffs on a man believed to be the perpetrator of the brutal murder of Rodolfo Zinco, known as 'o Gemello,' killed on April 22, 2015.

The pre-trial detention order was issued by the investigating judge of the Court of Naples, at the request of the District Anti-Mafia Directorate. The charges weigh heavily on the suspect: premeditated murder and illegal possession of weapons, all aggravated by mafia methods and facilitation.

The lead trap at Cavalleggeri

The story takes us back to the spring of 2015. Rodolfo Zinco is intercepted by hitmen in the heart of the Cavalleggeri neighborhood. He has no chance: he is shot several times with a 9mm pistol. A swift, ruthless ambush, carried out by organized crime. For years, the crime remained without an official culprit, but Carabinieri investigators have never stopped digging into the mud of the feud in western Naples.

Eight years of investigations and the turning point of the informants

The breakthrough is the result of a monumental investigative effort, lasting from 2017 to 2025. The men of the Investigative Unit, coordinated by the DDA, put the criminal map of the Phlegraean Fields under the magnifying glass.

Catching the alleged killer required an explosive mix of technology and old methods: on the one hand, a massive effort to wiretap and monitor calls, on the other, the precise and consistent revelations of several collaborators of justice. The informants tore through the veil of silence, naming names and piecing together the pieces of the puzzle.

The war for the empire of Bagnoli

Zinco's death wasn't the result of a simple brawl, but a genuine strategy of territorial expansion. According to the Prosecutor's Office, the crime was ordered by the leaders of the "Giannelli" clan, the criminal faction led by boss Alessandro Giannelli. Zinco was considered the mastermind of illicit activities in the neighboring Bagnoli neighborhood. He was too independent, too much of a burden for the Giannellis' hegemonic ambitions. The order was simple: eliminate him to send a signal of terror and take absolute control of the area's criminal activities, imposing the clan's intimidating power.

The main investigation: the 2020 raid

The Zinco murder remained a cold case for about five years. The major investigative breakthrough came in November 2020, when a major Carabinieri operation led to the arrest of 16 people affiliated with the Giannelli clan.

On that occasion, the District Anti-Mafia Directorate managed to reconstruct not only the organizational chart of the clan — which managed the racket, the drug dealing areas and the lucrative business of illegal parking in front of the discos of Coroglio — but also the motive and the instigators of the ambush of 22 April 2015.

The motive: Zinco, a longtime figure in the local underworld, had recently been released from prison. As soon as he was released, he expressed his intention to regain control of the illicit businesses in Bagnoli. This clashed head-on with the rise of the boss Alessandro Giannelli, who in the meantime had occupied the territory with his military force. Zinco was thus lured into a trap and "executed" on his doorstep.

The trials and convictions

The prosecution's thesis held up solidly in the three ordinary levels of judgment for the clan's leaders, leading to very severe sentences through the abbreviated procedure:

The First Instance Trial (March 2022): The investigating judge of the Naples Court delivers a first heavy blow. Boss Alessandro Giannelli is sentenced to life in prison as the instigator and organizer of the murder. His colonels are also sentenced: Patrizio Allard gets 30 years and Maurizio Bitonto (accused of driving one of the commando's scooters) gets 20 years. In total, that trial resulted in 10 convictions for various members of the criminal gang.

The Appeal (September 2023): The Naples Court of Assizes of Appeal upholds the life sentence for mafia boss Alessandro Giannelli, reiterating the ferocity and premeditation of the ambush, as well as the leading role of his accomplices in planning the crime, which was also committed with the tactical support of the allied Cutolo clan from the Rione Traiano district.

The minutes of the informants: the keystone

While the convictions for the instigator (Giannelli) and the logistical organizers (Bitonto, Allard) had already been handed down, it was the revelations of collaborators of justice that shed light on the material perpetrators who were still unidentified or not fully prosecuted.

During the trials, the statements of "prominent informants" of the West Naples mafia were decisive, including:

Gennaro Carra (former right-hand man and number two of the Cutolo clan of the Traiano district).

Salvatore Romano (known as 'muoll muoll, former boss of Pianura).

Their cross-examinations, combined with old and new wiretaps uncovered by the Carabinieri, provided the "serious evidence of guilt" that led to today's new arrest. Today's investigation therefore targets the gunmen who physically pulled the trigger that morning in Cavalleggeri in 2015.
