Salerno - A group of friends' evening turned tragic late yesterday evening when a 32-year-old local man decided to take a late-night swim in the stretch of sea off the Colombo seafront, on the outskirts of Salerno, in the densely populated Pastena area.
According to an initial reconstruction of events, the man dived into the water around 11:30 PM, but almost immediately became ill, preventing him from surfacing. His companion, noticing the young man's absence from the surface, immediately raised the alarm, causing panic among those present.
Emergency medical services quickly arrived at the scene of the tragedy, making a desperate attempt to resuscitate him once the body was recovered, but all hope was dashed when the man was pronounced dead. Carabinieri officers from the Salerno Provincial Command's Mobile Radio Unit also arrived on the scene to perform routine checks, as well as the Naples Fire Brigade's diving unit, who dove to recover the lifeless body of the 32-year-old.
The Salerno prosecutor's office has opened an investigation to clarify the exact circumstances of the incident, but at this time the most likely theory remains that the young man suffered a sudden illness while in the water, making it impossible for him to react. The body has been transferred to the morgue pending an autopsy, which will be performed in the coming days to shed full light on a death that has shocked the Salerno community.
