TORRE DEL GRECO – A hit-and-run driver changed his life forever. But it couldn't break his will. The story of Vincenzo Garofalo, a young naval engineer from Torre del Greco, is one of a dramatic fall transformed into an extraordinary sporting feat, becoming a symbol of resilience and determination.
On December 5, 2021, Garofalo was in Malta for work. After helping, as a member of the crew of the tugboat Carlo Magno, to unblock the Suez Canal, the young man was struck by a car on his motorcycle that drove away without providing assistance. The impact resulted in the traumatic amputation of his right leg.
Investigations conducted on the island reportedly confirmed the involvement of a vehicle belonging to a local taxi company, but the driver was never identified. This legal wound compounded the physical one, leaving the young man without anyone to hold accountable for the incident.
What for many would have been the end of a dream instead turned into the beginning of a challenge. In the summer of 2025, Garofalo walked the 800-kilometer Camino de Santiago using a temporary prosthesis and two crutches. It was a self-funded journey through the sale of bracelets, with a seemingly risky slogan printed on his backpack: "Road to Ironman 2026."
That dream came true a few days ago in France, where the young athlete completed the 2026 Ironman World Championship in Tours Métropole, tackling a 3,8-kilometer swim, a 180-kilometer bike ride, and a 42,2-kilometer marathon finish. A grueling test that represents one of the most coveted and challenging goals in world sport.
MP Francesco Emilio Borrelli intervened in the matter, paying tribute to the athlete's tenacity and relaunching the fundraising campaign to purchase technologically advanced prosthetics.
Vincenzo gives us a breathtaking lesson in dignity and courage. That cursed night in Malta, they tried to tear his wings, but after struggling to get back on his feet on his own, he now has the desire, the need, and the urgency to soar toward his next goals, starting with the Paralympics.
Borrelli then launched an appeal for solidarity. "The institutions and the community cannot stand by and watch in the face of the absence of a culprit and the prohibitive costs of the bionic and high-tech prosthetics required for professional sports. We are actively supporting the fundraiser 'New Legs for Vincenzo.' So far, over 1.300 donors have raised more than €44, but the final goal is still far away. Let's show that solidarity is stronger than any injustice. Let's help Vincenzo fly."
