The attack in Grumo Nevano
Grumo Nevano – Francesco Iannucci, the 18-year-old accused of beating a 67-year-old man who intervened to separate two young men during an argument, remains in prison. At the conclusion of the validation hearing, the investigating judge of the North Naples Court, Stefania Amodeo, validated the arrest issued by the Prosecutor's Office and issued a new pretrial detention order on charges of attempted voluntary manslaughter.
The decision comes as the pensioner continues to battle for his life in the intensive care unit of Frattamaggiore Hospital, where he remains hospitalized with a serious head injury and a delicate cerebellar hemorrhage.
Before the judge in Poggioreale prison, the eighteen-year-old appeared deeply distraught. He answered the magistrate's questions through tears, expressing what he described as sincere remorse for what had happened.
He apologized to the victim, her family, and the entire community of Grumo Nevano, shocked by the violence of the attack, which transformed a civilized gesture into a tragedy.
"Don't be like me. Don't learn from my reckless behavior. If you find yourself in a similar situation, even if you feel you've been provoked, never react with violence."
Words that, according to the defense, represent an attempt to prevent such a serious gesture from being interpreted as a model to follow.
At the hearing, the young man's lawyer, Giovanni Giordano, who has already announced his appeal to the Court of Review for a less restrictive precautionary measure, released a lengthy statement describing his client's state of mind.
"Francesco is deeply shocked. To call him repentant would be an understatement," the defense attorney wrote.
According to the lawyer, the boy has been living in a "state of profound prostration" for days and has been praying continuously for the pensioner to survive the very serious injuries he sustained.
The statement also reads: "With a heart full of pain, Francis apologizes to the injured person, to his family and to the entire local and national community, who were understandably shocked by the images of what happened and by the gravity of the consequences suffered by the injured person."
One of the most significant passages of the note concerns what the young man supposedly learned from prison.
According to his lawyer, Francesco was shocked to learn that some young people on social networks had even pointed to his attack as an act to be emulated.
Don't learn from my reckless behavior. What I did has caused very serious consequences for another person and risks profoundly compromising my future as well. If you find yourself in a tense situation, even if you feel you've been wronged or provoked, never react with violence.
Contact the police immediately or leave. A single moment of loss of control can forever change the lives of all those involved.
A message that the defense presents as an awareness of the devastating consequences caused by a few seconds of violence.
The parents of the eighteen-year-old also made it known, through their lawyer, that they share the pain of the elderly man's family.
They expressed their closeness to the victim and her loved ones, reiterating that they in no way wished to minimize the gravity of the incident and emphasizing that the judicial authorities will determine all responsibilities.
At the same time, they asked that the matter not be transformed into a media trial.
On the health front, there are only tentative signs of encouragement. The 67-year-old's clinical condition is described as slightly improving, but the situation remains extremely delicate.
The man continues to undergo continuous neurological checks and repeated CT scans to monitor the large hemorrhage in his cerebellum, the lesion that continues to worry doctors the most.
Outside the hospital, the family's grief mingles with anger. Maria, the injured man's daughter, can't hold back her tears.
We just want justice for our father, who, for a civilized gesture like separating two opposing sides, now finds himself fighting death. What happened is not right. That boy has thrown us into a vortex of fear, anguish, and dread for our father's future.
Then she adds: "Dad is fighting against death, and every extra minute he survives is a miracle. I thank God for this. But the problem of youth violence won't stop there. Today's youth are worthless, and prison, instead of causing shame, is actually seen as a learning experience."
Harsh words, spoken while the family awaits news from the doctors.
Giuseppe, an ambulance driver, stands beside his sister. He vividly describes the devastating consequences of the attack. "Dad is practically unrecognizable. His eyes are swollen, like a boxer's. They've had dozens of stitches stitched to the inside of his cheeks and mouth. The kick knocked out some of his teeth and cracked his jaw."
The list of injuries continues. "Another dozen stitches were placed in the back of his neck. But what really scares us is the hemorrhage in his cerebellum and the permanent damage it could cause. We pray to God that he is not taken away from us."
These are hours marked by waiting for the follow-up CT scans, by anguish and by the hope that the neurological picture will stabilize.
The attack has deeply affected Grumo Nevano, where the case continues to fuel outrage and concern over the escalation of youth violence.
The mayor attended the Provincial Committee for Public Order and Safety convened to address the incident, while the Prefect of Naples strongly condemned the incident and expressed his full solidarity with the victim and her family.
On the judicial front, the next step will be the appeal to the Court of Review, announced by the eighteen-year-old's defense, while investigators continue to reconstruct in detail every phase of the attack, which, in a matter of moments, changed the lives of two families and once again shed light on the phenomenon of violence among young people.
