Luca Esposito's last appointment: the contacts, the confession and the secrets of the investigation

There are still numerous pieces to be pieced together in the investigative puzzle surrounding the murder of Salerno journalist Luigi "Luca" Esposito, the fifty-three-year-old killed on the night between July 18th and 19th on farmland in the Cioffi area of ​​Eboli, and subsequently set on fire when, according to the Prosecutor's Office's reconstruction, he was still alive.

The investigation by the Salerno Public Prosecutor's Office, coordinated by Carabinieri investigators, has already led to the arrest of the alleged perpetrator, 26-year-old Tunisian Ridha Rahmouni, also known by the alias Amed Jamal, but numerous unanswered questions remain.

The investigative framework could take on a more defined shape with the preliminary hearing scheduled before the preliminary investigations judge.

Confession and reference to religious motivations

During the first interrogation, conducted immediately after his arrest with the assistance of an interpreter and his lawyer, Giovanni Mauri, the young man reportedly cooperated with investigators, giving a detailed confession of what happened.

According to sources close to the investigation, Rahmouni claimed that the violent argument was also motivated by his religious beliefs, citing Islamic precepts that prohibit relationships outside of marriage.

This version, however, currently represents only the suspect's account. Investigators continue to maintain the utmost secrecy regarding the motive, limiting themselves to describing it as strictly private and personal. This investigative silence suggests that the investigation into the true causes of the murder is still underway.

An appointment made in advance and no warning signs

One of the elements now considered consolidated by investigators concerns the relationship between the victim and the alleged murderer.

The meeting in the Eboli countryside was not a coincidence. All the evidence gathered indicates that Esposito had voluntarily traveled there to meet Rahmouni.

Analysis of phone records and cell phone records from their respective phones demonstrates that the two were in the same area during the hours of the crime. Even more significant is the telephone traffic recorded in the preceding days, especially between the evening of July 18th and the early hours of July 19th, when contact between the two phones intensified significantly.

The victim's behavior also confirms that he perceived no imminent danger. A few hours before the meeting, he had spoken to a colleague without showing any concern or tension. His behavior did not suggest what was about to happen.

The cameras and the elements that led to the arrest

The investigations proved particularly complex also due to the difficulty in tracking down the alleged perpetrator of the murder.

The twenty-six-year-old had taken refuge in an isolated farmhouse, difficult to reach, but located not far from the crime scene.

The investigative work developed through a variety of findings was fundamental.

The few cameras in the area apparently captured Rahmouni cycling with a flashlight on the night of the crime, likely searching for the exact spot where he was supposed to meet Esposito.

Strengthening the case are fingerprints found on the trunk of the victim's car and the discovery, in the farmhouse where the young man was hiding, of some of the journalist's personal effects: a cell phone, a ring presumably made of white gold, and a prepaid card.

These elements, together with the confession and the technical-scientific tests, formed the core of the arrest order.

A relationship that remained unknown even to the family members

The investigation also brought to light an aspect that had until now remained completely unknown even to the victim's closest circle.

Investigators found that telephone contact between Esposito and Rahmouni had begun as early as June 28, almost three weeks before the murder, a sign of a solid and not casual acquaintance.

Yet neither friends, nor colleagues, nor family members were aware of that acquaintance.

Those who knew the journalist describe him as extremely private in his personal life. Even the name of a woman named "Simona," whom Esposito sometimes referred to as his wife or partner, remains shrouded in mystery: none of his acquaintances ever had the opportunity to meet her in person.

This further sheds light on a private sphere that has remained almost completely unexplored until now, and could represent one of the missing pieces in the reconstruction of the motive.

The real crux of the matter remains the reason for the murder

While the investigative framework for the material reconstruction of the crime appears increasingly clear, the most delicate question remains open: understanding what really triggered such ferocious violence.

According to investigators' reconstruction, Luca Esposito was brutally attacked, repeatedly hit, and finally doused with flammable liquid and set on fire while he was still in agony.

An extremely brutal dynamic that suggests a violence far greater than that of a simple degenerate argument.

For this reason, the Prosecutor's Office continues to maintain the utmost secrecy regarding the motive, avoiding any disclosures that might compromise further investigations. The preliminary hearing, further technical and scientific investigations, and analysis of the seized electronic devices will likely definitively clarify the context in which one of the most brutal murders in recent months in the Salerno area unfolded.
