Naples, Francesco Pio Maimone's parents: "It's a city of pain."

Naples – After the events in Montesanto and on the eve of the Supreme Court's ruling on the life sentence for Francesco Pio Valda, the murderer of the young innocent pizza chef Francesco Pio Maimone, his parents Antonio and Tina Maimone painfully describe the city as a "suffering city", wounded by a long trail of blood and degradation that seems to have no end.

"This daily pain pushes us to ask ourselves what can be done for Naples," the parents say. "We need work, because it gives dignity and identity; we need culture, which brings awareness and beauty; we need the constant presence of the State, a true relationship between institutions and citizens based on dialogue and respect."

Antonio and Tina say they have always sought out the institutions and experienced solidarity, but now, on the eve of the final sentence, they are asking for justice to take its course. "The certainty of punishment is a fundamental safeguard for defending the value of life and for sending a warning to respect the rules of civilized living."

“My wife and I,” they conclude, “know that no sentence can bring our son back to us, but a just sentence gives dignity to innocent victims, their families, and the entire community.”

Naples thus remains a wounded city, crying out for help and hoping for a future of peace and legality, while Montesanto continues to ponder how to break a spiral of despair that seems to swallow up all hope.
