"Lorenzo, too, on a night that seemed like so many others, was killed by a gunshot to the chest, perhaps at the height of an argument that broke out during a soccer game: the desperate rush to the hospital, the end of all hope," they add.

"In Lorenzo's story, there is another cruelty that will remain etched in our memories and hearts: the anguish of the mother who heard her son's cry outside and found him on the floor, and that of the father who watched him die in her arms."

Alongside criminal oppression, there is an unbearable poverty of education and values, which is frightening and truly prevents us from looking to the present and the future with confidence."
