Naples is pushing for water houses to reduce single-use plastic: praise from Plastic Free Campania.

Naples has taken a significant step forward in the fight against plastic pollution with the City Council's approval of a motion to establish widespread Water Houses in the city's busiest areas. The initiative aims to drastically reduce the consumption of single-use plastic bottles, which are responsible for a large amount of waste abandoned in public spaces and have a significant environmental impact, particularly on the sea.

Plastic Free Campania, an association active since 2019 in promoting eco-friendly behavior through awareness campaigns and cleanup activities, expressed a positive opinion on the Neapolitan administration's decision.

Regional representative Silvana Cantone emphasized how this choice represents not only an environmental improvement but also an opportunity for cultural change. "The Water Houses encourage a conscious use of resources and help residents and tourists break the habit of buying plastic bottles," she stated.

The installation of these systems is part of a process that has already seen Naples stand out in 2025 by hosting the national Plastic Free Municipalities ceremony, an award given to administrations committed to waste reduction and promoting sustainability.

Plastic Free Campania hopes that the service offered will be free or accessible at a low cost to ensure maximum uptake and usability. The association also emphasizes the importance of an effective communications campaign, encouraging citizens to carry reusable water bottles to make the most of the new infrastructure. "Sustainability becomes concrete when statements translate into services that change daily habits," concludes Cantone.

With this move, Naples confirms its commitment to a more sustainable development model and demonstrates how environmental policies can translate into tangible actions that benefit the community and the environment.
