Black weekend, over 25 million trips: Anas tightens controls

The summer exodus toward Ferragosto (August 15th) is in full swing, and a severe weekend is expected on Italian roads. According to estimates from the ANAS Road Mobility Observatory, between today and Sunday, August 9th, over 25 million trips are expected along the road and highway network managed by the FS Group company.

To address the increase in traffic, Anas has increased its presence in the area, deploying approximately 2.500 technicians and operators to monitor traffic. Until September 7, 1.175 roadworks, equivalent to 83% of those currently active, will remain closed or suspended to facilitate traffic flow.

CEO Claudio Andrea Gemme appealed to drivers: "Safety must guide every journey. Respecting speed limits, maintaining a safe distance, avoiding distractions while driving, and taking periodic breaks during longer journeys are essential behaviors to prevent accidents and contribute to smoother and safer traffic." He continued: "The days marked with the black dot coincide with peak summer travel and require even greater attention from all road users."

Traffic will be particularly heavy along the main tourist routes, including the A2 Autostrada del Mediterraneo, the Jonica State Road 106, the Tirrena Inferiore State Road 18, the Pontina, the Appian Way, and numerous arteries in central and northern Italy. In Campania, particular attention will also be paid to the Domitiana State Road 7 Quater and the Sorrento Variante.

Since last Tuesday, the new "Vergilius Plus" Tutor systems have also been operational on 36 Anas routes. Twenty-six of these are located along the A2 motorway, on the Campania stretch between Salerno and Buonabitacolo, while other devices monitor speed on the Domitiana motorway near Pozzuoli and in the Santa Maria di Pozzano tunnel on the Sorrento bypass.

Finally, Anas and the Highway Police urge travelers to plan ahead, check their vehicle's condition, and pay maximum attention to driving to safely navigate the busiest weekend of the summer.
