Illicit funeral business: bodies in garages, two funeral homes in Nola closed

Nola – Law enforcement's crackdown on the shadowy aspects of the funeral business in Campania continues unabated. In the past few hours, Carabinieri officers from the Castello di Cisterna Group's Information Unit—acting under the coordination of the Judicial Authority and the Prefecture, with administrative support from the Local Police—have scrutinized several funeral services businesses in the municipality of Nola. This targeted operation has uncovered serious irregularities and blatant structural abuse.

The blitz and the sanctions

The results of the inspections are clear and leave no room for interpretation: the police immediately closed two businesses and reported three local entrepreneurs, aged 61, 51, and 46, to the judicial authorities. Administrative fines totaling €10 were also imposed on those responsible.

The inspections revealed a completely illegal funeral service, conducted in clear violation of current municipal regulations and the most basic organizational and health and hygiene rules.

Garages transformed into mortuary chapels

The most disturbing detail that emerged during the inspections concerned the completely illegal setup of the spaces dedicated to final farewells. The officers discovered that spaces formally registered as garages were in fact being used as actual funeral facilities, intended to accommodate grieving relatives and temporarily hold the remains.

In a second case, despite having a valid authorization to operate a basic funeral home, the owners had set up and operated an illegal funeral parlor within their offices, circumventing the strict regulations imposed on such sensitive areas.

A fragile sector, held hostage by illegal activity and unscrupulous profit.

The Nola seizure opens, once again, a Pandora's box for a sector—that of funeral services in the province of Naples—which remains extremely vulnerable. The proliferation of improvised "farewell rooms," or those entrusted to those without the necessary expertise and authorization, represents a serious alarm bell not only on a bureaucratic and administrative level, but also on an ethical and social level.

Funeral homes are governed by extremely strict regional regulations to protect public health and decorum. Transforming a garage into a funeral home degrades the mourning process to a mere drawer-like logic, ruthlessly capitalizing on the emotional fragility of families who, in times of grief, rely (often blindly) on these professionals.

This type of abuse inevitably fuels neighborhood monopolistic dynamics and unfair competition. Recent regional news has amply demonstrated how the funeral sector is a highly profitable business, historically exposed to criminal infiltration, corruption in the management of deceased persons in hospitals, and Camorra pressure.

Leaving the last farewell to the management of companies that systematically circumvent the rules creates a parallel system, in which the lack of controls would end up benefiting only those who operate behind the scenes.

The ongoing prevention efforts, coordinated by the Prefecture and law enforcement, thus become the only real institutional barrier. Chastising those who improvise funeral parlors in unsuitable premises is not just a sanction for construction or administrative violations, but also a restoration of legality, transparency, and, above all, civil dignity to the funeral rite.
