Castellammare di Stabia, fatal crash on viaduct, Canadian tourist investigated: investigation into wrong-way driving

A young Canadian tourist is being investigated for vehicular homicide after driving the wrong way on the Castellammare viaduct leading to the Privati ​​tunnel this afternoon, hitting and killing 59-year-old accountant Ciro Sannino, a resident of Sorrento, who was riding his motorbike in the direction of Naples.

A van carrying eleven Canadian tourists was approaching from the opposite direction, headed toward the Sorrento peninsula. According to an initial reconstruction, still under investigation by investigators, the driver of the van allegedly drove the wrong way, ending up in the path of the motorcycle.

The impact was extremely violent. The 59-year-old was thrown several meters away. Despite wearing a helmet, there was nothing that could be done for him: he died before the ambulance could reach him.

The dynamics still to be clarified

The exact cause of the van's incorrect travel remains to be determined. According to initial investigations, the driver may have mistakenly entered the road after driving down the access ramp and reaching the junction leading to Castellammare on one side and the Sorrento peninsula on the other.

This maneuver would have placed the vehicle on the same path as Sannino's motorcycle. However, the investigation will determine whether it was a mistake, a distraction, or another circumstance.

Cameras and decisive testimonies

To accurately reconstruct the dynamics of the accident, images from roadside cameras and the testimonies of motorists who witnessed the crash or were in the immediate vicinity will be essential.

Investigators will also have to ascertain the speed of the two vehicles, the exact position of the van and the motorcycle at the time of impact, and any other information useful in clarifying the sequence of events.

Van and license seized

Following initial investigations, the van rented by the tourist group was seized. The young Canadian driver's license was also confiscated, and he has been placed under investigation for vehicular homicide.

The young man was also subjected to the required tests to verify his psychophysical condition at the time of the accident and the possible presence of alcohol or substances.

A holiday turned into tragedy

The journey to Sorrento of the eleven Canadian tourists turned tragic in a matter of moments. The investigation will now focus on the driver's conduct and the reconstruction of every phase of the accident.
