Casalnuovo: Workers on the roof without protective gear

Yet another alleged case of serious safety violations on construction sites in Campania. In Casalnuovo di Napoli, on Via Virnicchi, several workers were filmed carrying out maintenance and renovation work on the rooftop of a building without safety harnesses and in the absence of perimeter guardrails, scaffolding, or lifelines—essential equipment for those working at height.

The images, sent to Green-Left Alliance MP Francesco Emilio Borrelli, triggered a report to the relevant authorities, refocusing attention on the issue of workplace accident prevention.

A region still in the "red zone"

The incident comes against a particularly alarming backdrop. According to data from the Vega Engineering Observatory for the first half of 2026, Campania is the third-highest Italian region in terms of overall number of workplace deaths, with 33 fatalities recorded since the beginning of the year. This figure places the region still in the "red zone" for mortality rates relative to the number of employed people.

Among the sectors most exposed are construction and working at heights, where failure to comply with safety regulations continues to represent one of the main causes of fatal accidents.

The complaint and the case of the unreachable certified email

Making the matter even more delicate is the complaint of a citizen who attempted to promptly report the situation to the Naples Territorial Labor Inspectorate via certified email. However, the communication was returned to the sender due to the certified email address being unreachable.

After receiving the documentation, Deputy Borrelli contacted the Casalnuovo municipal administration, which issued a formal warning to the company involved in the work, demanding compliance with the provisions of current legislation.

Borrelli: "We need zero tolerance."

"We are witnessing a collective madness and an acceptance of risk that can only be described as criminal. Thirty-three workplace deaths in Campania in just six months represent an unacceptable carnage. Working at heights without harnesses, guardrails, and protective systems means deliberately putting workers' lives at risk," says Francesco Emilio Borrelli.

The parliamentarian also calls for the alleged malfunction of the Labor Inspectorate's online channels to be investigated so that reports can be received without impediments.

"I have forwarded the complaint to the relevant authorities, law enforcement, and the local health authority, requesting an immediate halt to the work and a review of the construction site's permits. We need comprehensive inspections, zero tolerance for irresponsible contractors and clients, and efficient reporting systems that operate 24/7. We cannot continue to count victims caused by negligence and carelessness," the MP concludes.

Construction site safety: an emergency that can no longer wait

The Casalnuovo incident forcefully reiterates the issue of workplace safety, especially on construction sites, where compliance with procedures and the use of personal protective equipment are a legal requirement even before a moral duty. In a region that continues to record a high number of fatal accidents, any alleged violation must be investigated promptly, so that prevention prevails over reporting and new names are not added to the tragic list of so-called "accidental deaths."
