Cassino: Nurse from Sarno dies after being burned in building explosion

Carmine Sirica, 54, a nurse who suffered serious burns in the explosion at a building in Cassino a few days ago, died last night at the Sant'Eugenio Hospital in Rome.

The man, originally from the hamlet of Lavorate a Sarno and an employee of the Santa Scolastica hospital, had suffered burns over 90% of his body and was hospitalized at the Burns Center.

His partner, Caterina “Katia” Adinolfi, 40, a healthcare worker originally from Nocera Superiore, also an employee of the Frosinone Local Health Authority, is still in very serious condition with burns over 70% of her body.

The explosion, which occurred around 8:45 a.m. Monday morning in the top-floor apartment of a building on Via Guado Santa Maria, also caused the roof to collapse, rendering the building uninhabitable. The families residing there were forced to temporarily relocate.

Authorities, including the Fire Department and Carabinieri, are investigating to determine the cause of the accident, with particular attention to a possible fault or gas leak. The Cassino Prosecutor's Office has opened a case against persons unknown to investigate the circumstances of the explosion.
