Castel Sant'Elmo reopens tomorrow with an alternative route after the collapse of the external wall.

Following the collapse of a portion of its perimeter wall, Castel Sant'Elmo in Naples reopens to the public with modified access and ongoing checks on the area's stability.

Castel Sant'Elmo, one of Naples' historic symbols located on Vomero hill, will reopen to the public on Monday, August 24th, maintaining its usual visiting hours. The temporary closure was made necessary following the collapse, on the morning of August 22nd, of a portion of the exterior wall, not managed by the Vomero National Museums.

The collapse involved blocks of tuff that broke away near the large entrance gate, damaging an electrical generator underneath. This caused power outages within the facility. Museum Director Almerinda Padricelli explained that access to the Piazza d'Armi will be permitted via an alternative route, marked and supervised by staff on duty.

Technical investigations to assess the stability of the wall and the surrounding area are continuing with the involvement of the Campania Region and other competent bodies. The probable cause of the collapse has been identified as uncontrolled vegetation growth on the castle's interior wall, which would have compromised the solidity of the perimeter wall.

Visitors who visited the site during the closure, many of whom had already purchased tickets online, were informed that they could obtain a refund. Castel Sant'Elmo, which dominates the city from above, is now accessible again with enhanced security measures and attention to restoring its structural integrity.
