He had permission to leave home for "essential life needs," but he decided to use his time off to break into cars parked in front of a supermarket. The twenty-year-old Neapolitan ended up in prison after a movie-like chase.

Ermanno Del Vecchio, twenty, was under house arrest. Caught by Carabinieri Radiomobile while attempting to devalue a car, he attempted to flee on foot and in a car with an accomplice before being apprehended.

From using an ODB card to decode control units to crashing into a parked vehicle after driving the wrong way down Corso Campano, the shooting tools were seized and a custodial sentence was issued.

He had obtained permission from the judge to leave his home between 9:00 and 12:00 exclusively to attend to "essential life needs." But the list of permitted activities, obviously, did not include raiding parked cars. For Ermanno Del Vecchio, a Neapolitan born in 2005, the morning ended with his arrest and transfer to prison on charges of attempted theft.

The intervention of the Carabinieri and the escape

The incident occurred in Giugliano in Campania. Carabinieri officers from the Mobile Radio Unit caught him red-handed as he was exiting a car parked near a supermarket and attempting to break into another car.

Seeing himself discovered, the twenty-year-old attempted to flee at full speed. An accomplice, who remained behind the wheel of a Toyota Yaris, attempted to pull alongside him to get him inside, but the swift action of the officers foiled the plan.

The reckless chase and the crash

The frantic phases of the operation were broadcast over the radio, immediately mobilizing another Carabinieri patrol car. The second patrol immediately followed the speeding Yaris, tailing it for almost four kilometers.

In a desperate attempt to escape, the fleeing vehicle sped dangerously in the wrong direction along Corso Campano, before crashing into a parked car.

While the accomplice behind the wheel managed to escape without a trace, Ermanno Del Vecchio was stopped and immobilized by the police.

The tools of the trade

When searched on the scene, the 20-year-old was found in possession of advanced technical tools for car theft: a bayonet key and an ODB (On-Board Diagnostics) card, typically used to decode vehicle electronic control units and bypass security systems. Del Vecchio was thus sent to prison, ending his brief "respite" from house arrest.
