A fire at the Naples City Council headquarters has left no one injured, but record heat is to blame.

In the early morning of Saturday, August 8, 2026, a fire affected the municipal building on Via Verdi in Naples, home to the City Council and several administrative offices.

The fire broke out in the ground-floor foyer, causing extensive property damage, including the destruction of the entrance booth, the collapse of the central glass window, and the blackening of the upper portion of the main door. Smoke also reached the upper floors, necessitating further assessments of the building's structural stability.

The alarm was raised around 7:00 a.m. by a Municipal Police officer. The firefighters responded quickly and extinguished the blaze, which self-extinguished without causing any injuries. The State Police, along with the DIGOS (Special Operations Unit) and the Carabinieri (Carabinieri) also arrived on the scene. They conducted technical investigations, ruling out any signs of forced entry or the presence of fuses or accelerants.

Initial analyses indicate that the fire most likely stemmed from a short circuit caused by overheated electrical cables, a problem linked to the exceptional heat wave currently hitting the city, causing frequent blackouts in several areas.

Councilor Teresa Armato, present on site, maintained constant contact with Mayor Gaetano Manfredi and City Council President Enza Amato. In a joint statement, they reassured residents that no injuries were reported and that the event was accidental.

Municipal technicians, along with the Fire Department, are already working to assess the damage and ensure the safety of the structure. Urgent interventions are planned to restore and secure the building, with the aim of ensuring a rapid resumption of institutional and administrative activities.
