Lawyer Francesco Petruzzi
Naples—New developments are swirling around the embryo swap case at Naples' San Paolo Hospital, where a couple gave birth to a baby girl who is not biologically related to them. Breaking the silence is the family's new lawyer, Francesco Petruzzi, who intervenes to dismiss the controversy and clarify the reasons behind the dismissal of his previous lawyer.
The couple's decision: The revocation of the previous mandate and the appointment of attorney Petruzzi occurred in full compliance with the rules, guided by the parents' specific desire to avoid an alleged "quota lite agreement" illegally proposed by their colleague.
Institutional silence: For about a year, the family has been waiting for concrete answers from health authorities, responses that have so far proven scarce and unsatisfactory.
The judicial front: Immediately after the assignment, the defense filed an addition to the complaint with the Naples Public Prosecutor's Office.
An investigation into the matter has been opened, coordinated by magistrates from the Naples Public Prosecutor's Office—including Deputy Prosecutor Antonio Ricci and Public Prosecutor Stella Castaldo—and conducted by the Carabinieri of the NAS (National Anti-Mafia Unit), who are investigating the crime of personal injury. The investigators' goal is to reconstruct the exact circumstances of the error within the assisted reproductive technology laboratory.
Meanwhile, the case has also reached Parliament. In recent days, Francesco Emilio Borrelli, MP for the Green-Left Alliance (AVS), submitted a formal question to demand maximum transparency and determine any political and administrative responsibilities.
Tensions are not abating on the legal front either. Attorney Petruzzi has announced the filing of a formal complaint with the Naples Bar Association, denouncing a climate of ongoing professional attacks against him, which he claims have continued since the tragic case of little Domenico Caliendo.
