Naples: Man steals air conditioner from hospital waiting room, caught on camera

Naples – He wrapped the portable air conditioner in a large black plastic bag, casually placed it on a work trolley, and, taking advantage of a moment of emptiness in the waiting room, loaded it into the trunk of his car.

A seemingly simple plan was thwarted in a matter of hours by technology: the perpetrator of the theft at the Pascale Cancer Institute in Naples was caught by the new high-definition electronic eyes recently installed in the hospital.

Reconstruction and investigations

The alarm was raised immediately after the health department reported the incident. The Carabinieri of the Vomero Company began analyzing the surveillance footage, retracing the incident frame by frame. The images clearly showed the stages of the theft and, most importantly, accurately captured the license plate of the getaway vehicle.

From the license plate number, officers quickly identified the man: a 48-year-old from Pozzuoli, with no criminal record, employed by an external company that provides services within the hospital. The subsequent search recovered the refrigerator, which was immediately returned to the hospital. The 48-year-old was also charged with aggravated theft.

The incident has brought renewed attention to an increasingly widespread phenomenon in healthcare facilities. "I thank the Carabinieri for their prompt and precise response," said Pascale General Manager Maurizio di Mauro. "Hospital thefts have become a constant emergency in places that should, above all, guarantee care and protection."
