Part of the seized fish
Volla - Over half a ton of seafood without proper labeling and documentation was seized by the Naples Coast Guard at the Volla wholesale fish market. The owner of the inspected business was also fined €2.
The operation was carried out on Wednesday, August 19th, and Thursday, August 20th, by officers from the Naples Port Authority, under the coordination of the Coast Guard's Area Fisheries Control Center. The inspections were aimed at verifying the legality of the marketing of the catch and compliance with traceability and labeling regulations for products intended for sale.
The inspection, conducted in the warehouses within the wholesale facility, was triggered by an information-investigative phase conducted both by land and sea. During the investigation, the military discovered irregularities in the commercial documentation and mandatory information required to accompany fish products throughout the supply chain.
The seizure involved approximately 516 kilograms of fish, consisting mainly of red shrimp from Mazara del Vallo, of the species Aristaeomorpha foliacea, and bluefish, Pomatomus saltatrix.
According to the Coast Guard, the shipment was completely unlabeled. This made it impossible to accurately determine the origin, provenance, and proper traceability of the catch, essential elements for ensuring transparency for consumers and health checks along the distribution chain.
The local health authority also intervened on the seized product, which after investigation declared the quantity inedible. The fish was then placed in the custody of the Naples Municipal Zoo, where it will remain pending further confiscation procedures.
At the end of the foreseen process, the product can be sent for disposal or destruction.
