Naples – The earthquake that shook the Phlegraean Fields on July 31st continues to have an impact, shifting the emergency from seismic to economic. To mitigate the risk of a production freeze, the main economic representatives in the Naples area have decided to join forces, making a formal appeal to the metropolitan area's banks.
Signing the request for urgent intervention are Ciro Fiola (president of the Naples Chamber of Commerce), Vittorio Genna (president of the Industrialists' Union), and Matteo De Lise (head of the Order of Accountants and Accounting Experts).
The three institutions urge banks to promptly suspend mortgage and loan payments, without penalty, and to provide extraordinary liquidity support to residents and businesses in the affected municipalities.
Credit intervention is essential to support a local economy heavily skewed toward the service and hospitality sectors. In the Phlegraean Fields, the earthquake's impact has struck the tourism sector at its core: many businesses and hospitality establishments have been forced to close their doors, both due to direct property damage and the massive wave of cancellations from tourists following the earthquake.
A double blow that is wiping out the summer season's takings, the main source of income for hundreds of families and businesses along the coastal and volcanic coast.
"In a time of great difficulty for families and businesses, it is essential that the banking system demonstrate the same sensitivity it has shown during other national emergencies," emphasize Fiola, Genna, and De Lise. According to the leaders of the Chamber of Commerce, Confindustria, and Odcec, the credit system must support the requests already submitted to the Government regarding the freezing of tax, social security, and contribution obligations. The stated goal is to ease the immediate financial burden, preserve employment, and avoid an irreversible freeze on investment in the Phlegraean Fields.
Many residents and business owners in the Phlegraean Fields rely exclusively on summer tourism. The closures imposed by safety checks, combined with the flight of visitors and the halt in bookings, have wiped out the liquidity needed to meet ordinary deadlines.
