A frame of the attack on Guido the homeless man
Caserta is in shock over the death of Guido, the former waiter and homeless man who was seriously injured in a violent attack in Piazza Sant'Anna. He died in the hospital after two days of agony.
According to local news reports, the incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon, when Guido was reportedly attacked and repeatedly hit by another man.
A man of Ukrainian origin was arrested and charged with voluntary manslaughter. Authorities are currently investigating the case.
Adding to the drama are the images of the attack circulating online. The video allegedly shows Guido on the ground as his attacker continues to strike him. These particularly harsh images have sparked shock and outrage, bringing the issue of violence against vulnerable people back into the spotlight.
The release of the video has helped forcefully highlight the brutality of the episode, transforming a news tragedy into a new question about the protection of people living on the margins of society.
Guido was well-known in the city. After working as a waiter, he had gradually slipped into marginalization, eventually living on the streets. The parish priest of the nearby Church of Our Lady of Lourdes, Father Antonello Giannotti, recalled the relationship he had built with the man and his attempts to find him a place to live. The parish soup kitchen had become a point of reference for Guido.
The bishop of Caserta and Capua, Pietro Lagnese, also expressed grief and indignation, emphasizing that Guido's death should question the community's conscience.
Francesco Emilio Borrelli, a member of parliament for the Green and Left Alliance, also spoke out about the tragedy, calling for justice for Guido and a concrete response on the social front.
"Justice for Guido" was the thrust of Borrelli's speech, calling the incident an "inhumane act of violence" against someone already severely affected by life. The MP also stressed the need to strengthen social services and not abandon the most vulnerable.
Guido's death thus refocuses attention on the conditions of the homeless and, more generally, on the need to build a support network capable of intercepting the most vulnerable situations before they become emergencies.
The tragedy in Piazza Sant'Anna leaves a deep wound in the heart of Caserta. On the one hand, the investigation must fully clarify the dynamics of the attack and those responsible; on the other, a question remains for the entire community: how effective is the safety net for those living in extremely marginalized conditions?
Guido's death can't just be a news story. It's also the dramatic epilogue to a story of fragility and loneliness that today challenges institutions, social services, and citizens.
