Sudden thunderstorms in Campania, yellow alert issued in three areas

Naples – Unstable afternoon in Campania. The regional Civil Protection Department has issued a yellow weather alert for sudden thunderstorms, valid from 1:00 PM to 8:00 PM today, Tuesday, August 11. The warning, based on assessments by the Functional Center, specifically affects three areas of the region: Zone 2 (Alto Volturno and Matese), Zone 3 (Sorrento-Amalfi Peninsula), and Zone 5 (Tusciano and Alto Sele).

Forecasts indicate the arrival of isolated showers and thunderstorms, locally of moderate intensity. These are extremely dangerous phenomena, characterized by high forecast uncertainty and rapid development. The Operational Center warns that sudden hailstorms, violent gusts of wind, and lightning cannot be ruled out. The situation is aggravated by the risk of falling branches or trees, potentially dangerous for roofs and exposed structures.

The bulletin signals a concrete hydrogeological risk for the affected areas. The warning concerns the possible sudden rise in water levels of smaller watercourses, resulting in flooding of surrounding areas. Widespread flooding is expected in underground and ground-level areas, as well as surface water flow onto roads. Particular attention should be paid to backflow from drainage systems, which could overflow and affect low-lying urban areas. The area, made fragile by hydrogeological conditions, is also exposed to the risk of falling rocks and occasional landslides.

The Civil Protection Department has already alerted all relevant authorities, recommending the immediate implementation of all structural and non-structural measures envisaged in the municipal emergency plans to prevent and mitigate the effects of the expected weather events.
