The Bishop of Pozzuoli and Ischia: He is close to the population, but the churches have suffered significant damage.

Pozzuoli – The Bishop of Pozzuoli and Ischia, Carlo Villano, expresses the diocese's closeness to the people affected by the earthquake and hopes for the reopening of the port.
Damage is also being reported to places of worship in the Phlegraean Diocese, already affected by bradyseism. Last night's earthquake forced the closure of the few churches that remained open, where extensive damage was reported.
In a statement from the Diocese, Bishop Villano expressed his closeness to the population. "The Diocese's first thoughts are with the people and families affected by the critical situation that has arisen: we share their pain and hardship, and we are offering our support. Numerous homes are uninhabitable, with extensive damage to businesses and churches in Pozzuoli, and navigation in the port of Pozzuoli has been suspended," the statement reads.

Bishop Villano: I invite the community to unite and protect the weakest

"I express the Church's closeness," declared the Bishop of Pozzuoli and Ischia, "to the population, the police, and all those engaged in civil defense efforts. I renew my invitation to the entire community to unite, especially to protect and support the most vulnerable, children, the elderly, and the sick.
The closure of the port of Pozzuoli, due to problems with the dock and surrounding access routes, is particularly impactful for the economic and social life of the Phlegraean Fields and the island of Ischia. I support the call for its immediate reopening, especially considering the summer season.

Damage to places of worship: diocesan office intensifies monitoring

Not long ago, in October 2023, the bishop emphasized the churches' full willingness to offer hospitality, but at the moment the few churches in Pozzuoli that were still open for worship show extensive damage.
"In these hours," the bishop communicates, "the diocesan Office for Cultural Heritage is intensifying its monitoring efforts, but the situation appears very problematic."
The bishop once again expresses his gratitude for the numerous expressions of support that have been pouring in in recent hours. Significant words were expressed by the President of the Italian Episcopal Conference, Cardinal Matteo Maria Zuppi, and by the Vice President of the Italian Episcopal Conference, Monsignor Francesco Savino, who assured them of their support and prayers for the communities facing, once again, moments of fear and great apprehension.
