Collapse of the monumental cloister of San Francesco in Aversa: no injuries but extensive damage.
In Aversa, in the heart of the historic center, a structural failure occurred this morning inside the monumental cloister of San Francesco, one of the most significant sites in the city's history and identity. Fortunately, no one was in the area at the time of the collapse, which had been closed off for several months by order of the Fire Department.
Mayor Francesco Matacena, along with representatives of the Diocese and the Cultural Heritage Department, along with firefighters, law enforcement officers, and local police, responded promptly to the scene. The complex, owned by the Diocese but a shared heritage of the Aversa community, suffered damage that, while extensive, now requires a more detailed assessment by the Superintendency's technicians.
They will be responsible for determining the necessary measures to secure and restore the damaged portion. The Municipality has pledged its cooperation with the other institutions involved to protect this important city heritage.
