Ercolano, a man threatens to jump onto the ruins from a height of 30 meters: saved by the Carabinieri.
Herculaneum – A delicate operation, lasting four hours in the silence of the Herculaneum Archaeological Park, averted tragedy on the night between August 11th and 12th. A 34-year-old man entered the excavation area with the intention of taking his own life, threatening to jump from a height of approximately 30 meters directly above the ancient Roman ruins.
The alarm was raised around 1:00 a.m., immediately mobilizing the local Carabinieri station . Given the complexity and dramatic nature of the situation, specialists from the Carabinieri Negotiation Unit intervened on the scene.
Between 01:00 and 05:00 in the morning, a long and patient conversation took place in the dark: the Carabinieri managed to establish emotional contact with the 34-year-old, establishing the climate of trust necessary to make him desist from the extreme act.
At dawn, the man was brought to safety. Due to his serious state of mental and physical agitation, the 118 paramedics—who arrived on the scene alongside law enforcement—arranged for his immediate transport to the Maresca Hospital in Torre del Greco, where he is currently being treated.
