Thunderstorm warning in effect across the region today as well

The Campania Region's Civil Protection Department has issued a new yellow-level weather alert for today, Sunday, August 9, following the Regional Functional Center's assessment of the evolving weather conditions.

The warning will remain in effect from 1:00 PM to 9:00 PM and will affect almost the entire region. Zone 1, which includes the Campanian Plain, Naples, the Gulf Islands, and the Vesuvian area, is excluded.

Sudden thunderstorms and intense phenomena

According to forecasts, isolated showers and thunderstorms are expected in the affected areas, locally of moderate intensity. The Civil Protection Department emphasizes, however, that these phenomena could develop rapidly and with significant forecast uncertainty, a typical characteristic of summer thunderstorms.

Episodes of the following cannot be excluded:

hailstorms;
strong gusts of wind;
intense electrical activity with lightning;
falling branches and trees;
damage to roofs and particularly exposed structures.
Hydrogeological risk: possible flooding and landslides

The alert also concerns hydrogeological risk, with potential consequences especially in the most vulnerable areas.

Among the critical issues reported are:

rising levels of smaller watercourses;
flooding of underground rooms and ground floors;
accumulations of water on the roads;
backflow of sewer systems with possible flooding of depressed urban areas;
rockfall;
occasional landslides in areas characterised by greater soil fragility.

The appeal of the Civil Protection

The regional Civil Protection Department urges municipalities and all competent authorities to implement the measures set out in their respective emergency plans to prevent and mitigate the effects of severe weather.

Residents are advised to exercise extreme caution, avoiding parking near trees, waterways, and areas prone to flooding during storms, and limiting nonessential travel in areas affected by the most intense storms.
