In the photo, a detail of the story.
The autumnal equinox arrives on September 23rd, but in Campania the weather seems to be postponing the change of season: after the weekend's rains, a new anticyclone is expected.
Autumn is almost here, at least on the calendar. In Campania, however, the weather still seems undecided about whether or not to finally usher in the new season.
On September 23, 2026 , at 2:05 AM, the autumnal equinox will arrive, the astronomical moment that officially marks the transition from summer to autumn.
But in the days leading up to the equinox, the weather in Campania will be anything but stable. Forecasts indicate a period of variability and instability , with rain and showers expected especially between Friday the 18th and the weekend, followed, however, by a new rise in high pressure.
In short, autumn is arriving, but it doesn't seem to be bringing with it a true autumnal climate yet.
The first real sign of the change in circulation will arrive over the weekend.
According to the latest weather forecasts, a low-pressure system over the Tyrrhenian Sea will cause increased instability in the central and southern regions on Saturday, September 19th . Campania is among the affected areas, with the possibility of showers and thunderstorms and stronger winds.
The regional forecast also confirms a changeable phase. Clouds and possible precipitation are expected for Friday, September 18th, especially in the inland areas and southern part of the region, with subsequent improvements in the evening.
The picture should then evolve rapidly.
On Sunday, September 20th, instability will tend to be concentrated more in the southern regions, while at the same time a new high pressure system will begin to develop. Temperatures are also expected to drop from the highest levels, accompanied by stronger winds from the north.
This is precisely the most interesting aspect of the weather forecast for Campania.
The weekend's unsettled weather doesn't seem destined to immediately usher in a long autumnal phase. On the contrary, according to available projections, after the worsening conditions, the anticyclone could return , bringing more stable conditions to much of Italy.
The available forecasts for Naples show a possible rise in temperatures already in the days following the weekend: after the lowest values expected on Friday, maximum temperatures could return to around 29-31°C between Sunday 20th and Monday 21st September.
For this reason, it would be premature to talk about the “end of summer” already.
Campania could once again experience a situation typical of the transition phase: rain and thunderstorms on one side, sun and almost summer-like temperatures on the other.
The date to mark on your calendar is September 23rd.
The autumnal equinox will arrive at 2:05 AM and will officially mark the beginning of astronomical autumn.
But the astronomical change of seasons does not necessarily coincide with an immediate drop in temperatures.
In fact, current projections for Naples show relatively high temperatures right around the equinox, with highs near 28-29°C between September 22nd and 24th. This is obviously a trend and not a definitive forecast, especially considering the time span.
The situation could therefore be that of an autumn arriving on the calendar while the climate still retains several elements of summer.
This is the question for which, at the moment, it is not possible to give a precise date.
Forecasts beyond 5-7 days become progressively less reliable and should be considered a trend. Therefore, any assumptions regarding a sharp drop in temperatures in the second half of September will need to be confirmed by future updates.
What emerges from the current projections, however, is quite clear: the disturbed passage of 18-20 September does not seem to necessarily coincide with the beginning of a stable and lasting autumn phase.
Instead, it could be a brief bout of bad weather inserted into a phase still characterised by mild temperatures.
The picture for the next few days therefore depicts a region still suspended between two seasons.
On the one hand, there are the rains and thunderstorms expected over the weekend, the drop in temperatures and the strengthening of the winds: elements that make one think of autumn.
On the other hand, the possible rise of the anticyclone and the return of temperatures close to 30 degrees remind us that summer does not yet seem ready to definitively leave Campania.
For Naples and the other provinces of Campania, therefore, the advice is to follow the updates day by day: the weather in the coming days could change rapidly, especially in the phase immediately following the passage of the low pressure system.
Autumn, in short, is upon us. But in Campania, at least for now, it doesn't yet seem like the season of low temperatures and definitively cool days.
The new season will officially arrive on September 23rd, but the real turning point will depend on whether the weather will be more consistent or if high pressure will return to give Campania new summery spells.
