Porta Capuana, new security crackdown: increased controls and evening patrols.

Security has been tightened again at Porta Capuana, one of the most important historic areas in central Naples. This morning, the Prefect of Naples, Michele di Bari, chaired a meeting of the Provincial Committee for Public Order and Security, attended by provincial law enforcement officials and representatives of the City of Naples.

The meeting focused on the degradation and criminal incidents in the area, with particular attention to the most vulnerable areas and the need to strengthen the institutional presence in the area.

The Committee has therefore ordered increased controls and surveillance services, as part of the preventive measures already in place for the city areas considered most sensitive.

Targeted patrols between the Police, Carabinieri and Guardia di Finanza

The new security system includes targeted and coordinated patrols by the State Police, the Carabinieri, and the Guardia di Finanza, with the involvement of the Municipal Police.

Particular attention will be paid to the evening and nighttime hours, when the need to protect the most exposed areas is greatest. A specific focus will be on the areas overlooking the Porta Capuana gardens.

The area, moreover, is already included in the list of city areas subject to enhanced surveillance.

Safety will accompany the redevelopment

The extraordinary surveillance plan is intended to anticipate and accompany the urban redevelopment projects planned by the Municipality of Naples.

Among the events already planned are the Christmas markets in Piazza San Francesco a Capuana, scheduled for December 2026. The goal is to ensure adequate safety for the initiatives that will attract residents, visitors, and tourists.

The comparison with traders and associations

During the meeting, the Prefect of Bari emphasized the importance of listening to the local community, associations, and representatives of local merchants.

For the institutions, territorial protection must therefore be accompanied by constant dialogue with those who live and work daily in the Porta Capuana area.

Not just repression: the neighborhood's revitalization

The strategy outlined by the Prefecture, however, isn't limited to strengthening enforcement. For the prefect, security must be combined with interventions capable of fostering the neighborhood's social and economic rebirth.

Porta Capuana, located in the heart of Naples' historic center, represents an area with significant tourism potential. From this perspective, special attention should also be paid to supporting the area's entrepreneurial activities and long-standing merchants.

Legality and redevelopment to return the square to the city

The strategy therefore aims to make security, legality and urban redevelopment go hand in hand.

The new surveillance system will create the conditions for greater surveillance of the area and the gradual return of public spaces to residents and tourists. The ultimate goal is to restore Porta Capuana to a more lively and safe place, enhancing one of the city's most significant historical entrances.
