Remembrance at Sea: Castellammare unites the memories of fallen sailors in a national ceremony.

Castellammare di Stabia is preparing for a civil ceremony that brings together several chapters of naval history, with the aim of remembering sailors lost at sea in a unified manner. Traditionally, the Day of Remembrance for Sailors Lost at Sea is celebrated on September 9th, but this year the commemoration has been moved to Wednesday, September 30th to align anniversaries linked to distant historical events.

The initiative is promoted by the Luigi Longobardi MOVM Group of the National Association of Italian Sailors, with the moral patronage of the City of Castellammare di Stabia. The stated goal is to unite on a single date the remembrance of all those who died at sea, both civilian and military, and to offer a solemn public engagement with the community's heritage of remembrance.

From a historical perspective, memory remains anchored to two distinct but closely linked moments: on the one hand, the series of victims in the war actions that took place eighty-three years ago off the island of Asinara, with the loss of over 1.700 sailors following the sinking of the battleship Roma and the destroyers Vivaldi and Da Noli, operated by German bombers the day after the armistice; on the other, today's anniversary linked to the submarine Gondar.

The latter is the symbolic fulcrum of the day, as it marks the 86th anniversary of the sinking of the electrician sailor Luigi Longobardi, after whom the Castellammare di Stabia Group is named.

The ceremony, scheduled for 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., will take place along the route between the Sailors' Church of Santa Maria di Portosalvo and Pozzano Bay. At noon, a wreath will be thrown into the sea, known as the "launch of the wreath into the sea," off the coast of Pozzano, as a symbolic moment of remembrance and respect.

The celebration will be open to numerous local civil, military, and religious authorities, reflecting on a memory that concerns the entire community. The initiative thus represents a choice of civic responsibility: to remember so as not to forget, in a setting of sobriety and dignity, where past and present dialogue through a sense of community and service.
