Road accidents: 304 pedestrians killed since the beginning of the year, including 14 in the last week.

304 pedestrians have died on Italian roads since the beginning of the year, 14 of them in the last week alone. That's an average of two deaths per day, with a particularly severe toll among those over 65: ten of those who died in the last seven days were over 65.

This is what emerges from the latest report on the phenomenon produced by the special ASAPS-Sapidata Observatory. Of the 304 victims recorded in 2026, 200 were men and 104 women, while 145, or 47,6%, were at least 65 years old.

The monthly toll provides a consistent snapshot of the emergency: 47 deaths in January, 30 in February, 40 in March, 27 in April, 32 in May, 33 in June, 28 in July, 31 in August, and already 36 in September.

In the first eight months of the year, the comparison with 2025 also highlights an 8% increase in deaths: 268 pedestrian deaths compared to 248 in the same period of the previous year.

The data on pedestrian crossings is also particularly significant. Since the beginning of the year, 137 fatal accidents have occurred at crosswalks, accounting for 45% of the total.

There were 26 incidents of hit-and-run driving, accounting for 8,5% of all incidents, with drivers fleeing the scene without providing assistance. The latest incident reported by the Observatory occurred in Pompeii, where a 66-year-old woman was killed.

At the regional level, the highest number of pedestrian deaths was recorded in Lombardy, with 48 victims, eight of them in Milan. Veneto follows with 35, Campania with 30, and Lazio with 28, including 14 in Rome alone. Piedmont is further behind with 24, Tuscany with 21, Emilia-Romagna with 20, Sicily with 18, Puglia with 17, and Liguria with 15.

The toll continues with Friuli Venezia Giulia at 9, Calabria and Sardinia at 8, Marche at 6, Abruzzo and Trentino-Alto Adige at 5, Umbria at 4, Valle d'Aosta at 2, and Molise at 1. The picture remains worrying even when looking at the whole of 2025: according to Istat data, 419 pedestrian deaths occurred in Italy last year.
