Sorrento: Prefecture and Municipality reach agreement to combat infiltration of public procurement contracts.

A new measure to prevent the risk of organized crime infiltration in public procurement has been established in Sorrento through the legality pact signed this morning by the Prefect of Naples, Michele di Bari, and Mayor Corrado Fattorusso.

The document was signed at the end of the meeting of the Provincial Committee for Public Order and Safety, held at the Sorrento Town Hall. The meeting was also attended by the Deputy Chief of Police of Naples, Alfredo Carosella, the Attorney General of Torre Annunziata, Nunzio Fragliasso, the Provincial Commander of the Naples Financial Police, Brigadier General Carmine Virno, and the Provincial Commander of the Naples Carabinieri, Brigadier General Biagio Storniolo.

The protocol will last two years, with the possibility of renewal for an additional two years. The goal is to strengthen legality and security and expand the monitoring network for public procurement, extending checks to include works, services, and supplies normally excluded from the anti-mafia precautionary system.

The measure specifically targets sectors considered most at risk of infiltration: from construction to urban planning, including funeral and cemetery services, restaurants, canteens, catering, environmental services, and waste management.

"The serious legal issues affecting Sorrento have made it necessary to strengthen legal enforcement," explained Prefect Michele di Bari. The protocol is part of the measures established by the Interior Minister's decree last April to strengthen the system of anti-mafia checks. Preliminary checks before awarding contracts will be strengthened through the Prefecture of Naples and will also cover the activities of entities, organizations, institutions, special agencies, foundations, and companies owned by, or otherwise subject to the control, oversight, or participation of, the Municipality of Sorrento.

"This protocol was born out of close collaboration with the Minister of the Interior, Matteo Piantedosi, whom I thank along with the prosecutor of Torre Annunziata, Nunzio Fragliasso," added di Bari. The prefect also emphasized the city's other face: "Sorrento has a healthy social fabric and a deep civic sense, as well as a widespread desire to turn things around."

The new agreement also aims to strengthen the exchange of information between institutions. "The document signed today establishes close collaboration between the Municipality and the Prefecture through a constant exchange of information. This is an example of collaboration serving the community, with the aim of rebuilding citizens' trust in institutions," the prefect concluded.

Mayor Corrado Fattorusso thanked the prefect and the prosecutor for their "availability, collaboration, and sensitivity," citing the administrative difficulties inherited from the current city government.

"Every day we are tasked with balancing the just and sacrosanct rules of legality with the daily routine of administrative activity, responding to citizens' legitimate requests," Fattorusso stated. "Our commitment is and will remain maximum, to ensure transparency, protection of the territory, and the well-being of our entire community."
