Torre del Greco, 'My husband died from superficiality': the final farewell to Raffaele Grillo amid grief and anger

Raffaele Grillo, the 44-year-old sailor who tragically died after being crushed by his own car, was paid his last respects today in the Papal Basilica of Santa Croce, in the heart of the Torre del Greco port area. The ceremony was marked by profound grief and anger, as the shadow of medical malpractice looms over the case.

The Torre Annunziata Public Prosecutor's Office, which is coordinating the investigation, has registered five doctors from the Maresca hospital as suspects on suspicion of manslaughter.

The dynamics of the accident and the contested rescue operations

The investigation stems from a complaint filed immediately after the victim's death by Mariarca Formisano, the victim's wife, assisted by attorney Gennaro Ausiello. The reconstruction of events dates back to August 13th, around 12:30 PM. Raffaele had parked his car on a wide sidewalk near his home, forgetting to apply the handbrake due to a momentary distraction related to the presence of a child.

Due to the slope, the car moved suddenly, hitting him and crushing him against a pole. Rescued by passersby and his wife, the forty-four-year-old was suffering from excruciating pain in his pelvis. According to family members, however, the emergency vehicle showed serious problems:

From green code to death by internal bleeding

Raffaele's condition worsened once they reached the emergency room at Maresca Hospital on Via Montedoro. Triage staff did not find Raffaele's condition critical, so much so that they assigned him a green code. Despite the man's repeated complaints, calling for water and painkillers due to the severe pain, the paramedics did not order any diagnostic tests or further investigations to rule out internal injuries.

"Raffaele was asking for help, and they ignored him, thinking he was exaggerating," his wife, Mariarca, recounts. Temporarily removed from the room at the doctors' request, she received the devastating news just four hours later: her husband had died from severe internal bleeding. Public Prosecutor Vincenzo Lanni ordered the body to be seized and an autopsy performed, while the investigation aims to shed light on the responsibilities of the five emergency room professionals under investigation.
