Scampia: A 12-year-old girl was left to guard drugs and counterfeit money. Her drug-dealing mother, who fled upon seeing the police, was reported.

Naples – A terrified twelve-year-old girl was hidden under the bed, left alone in a squatted apartment while law enforcement officers knocked on the door. This is the most dramatic development in the extraordinary, "high-impact" patrol conducted this evening in the Scampia neighborhood by the Carabinieri of the local station, along with officers from the Stella Company's Operations Unit and the Canine Unit.
The operation, launched to sift through drug dealing hubs and restore legality to the neighborhood, brought to light a serious situation of family and criminal degradation, culminating in the complaint of a young mother and the arrest of a fugitive.

The discovery of the drugs and the seizure in Via Fellini

It all began on Via Fellini, where officers went to investigate a report of an illegal occupation inside a public housing complex. Finding the door of the seemingly deserted apartment ajar, the Carabinieri entered to inspect the property. While searching the bedroom, they made a discovery: a 12-year-old girl had hidden under the mattress. As officers reassured her, the little girl whispered a few words: "Mommy's not here."
The subsequent search of the property revealed the woman's motive for fleeing. The Carabinieri found and seized: four blocks of hashish weighing a total of 400 grams; two knives still coated in the drug; 70 counterfeit euros in cash; and an accounting ledger recording the drug dealing operations.
The Carabinieri immediately activated protection protocols for the minor. When she was taken to the barracks, the officers offered her a chocolate and a drink, trying to reassure her and help her overcome the shock.
Only after several hours did the mother report to the police station. Subsequent investigations allowed the reconstruction of the incident: the woman, a 31-year-old with no criminal record, had seen the Carabinieri arrive from her window and fled shortly before the raid, abandoning her daughter at home.
The woman was charged with possession of drugs with intent to distribute, child abandonment, possession of counterfeit banknotes, and unlawful occupation of public property. The child has been temporarily returned to her mother, but social services and the relevant municipal offices have already been notified of the incident to monitor the family unit.
High-impact checks continued throughout the night and into the early hours of the morning, yielding further investigative findings.
Massimo Merolla, 46, was arrested for escaping from his home despite the measures against him. Two other people were transferred to prison pursuant to orders from the Judicial Authority, which ordered the revocation of their previous house arrest.
Two young men, a 21-year-old and a 16-year-old, were charged with driving without a license, aggravated by a repeat offense within the past two years.

On Via Galimberti, inside the common areas of a building, officers found and seized another 50 grams of hashish. Carabinieri officers from the Stella Company will continue their checks in the coming days to ensure preventative patrolling of sensitive areas in the neighborhood.
