Gunfire in Montecalvario overnight: A 35-year-old man injured
Naples – Another shell casing on the asphalt, another rush with sirens blaring toward the Vecchio Pellegrini emergency room. At 1:00 AM, the entrance to the Pignasecca hospital became yet another theater of the simmering feud shaking the Spanish Quarter.
A 38-year-old man entered the hospital after suffering a gunshot wound to the lower limbs. Doctors stabilized him and admitted him to the hospital. His condition is not serious, but the epidemiological picture of urban violence in the area has seen yet another spike.
Officers from the Montecalvario Police Station arrived on the scene to conduct initial investigations, but were immediately met with a classic wall of silence: the victim did not provide any details that would help reconstruct where and why the attack occurred.
The victim's silence is a familiar pattern, leading the investigation toward organized crime. The alleys near Via Toledo and Corso Vittorio Emanuele have been a battleground for months between emerging gangs, gangs composed of very young people with ties to the old mafia districts or openly at odds with them.
At stake is the monopoly on open-air drug dealing venues and, above all, the systematic extortion of the hundreds of restaurants and bars that fuel the nightlife of the historic center.
The night's incident is part of a series of intimidating shootings, often in crowds or in dark alleys after bars close. Investigators from the Flying Squad and the local police station are analyzing video surveillance footage in the area to pinpoint the exact location of the ambush and identify the members of the gang, while tensions are rising in the neighborhoods due to a clash between clans that appears to be raging all day.
