Bulldozers are in action along the Caserta coastline to clear away new illegal construction and restore legality. Fifty properties have been demolished in the last three years between Castel Volturno and the rest of the Caserta coastline as part of the restoration of legality carried out by the Santa Maria Capua Vetere Public Prosecutor's Office, at the instigation of the Naples Attorney General's Office.
On Destra Volturno, demolition has begun on the old "Lido della Gioventù," a structure declared illegal and seized. The complex, after being clandestinely reopened by its owner a few years ago, was again seized by the Coast Guard.
The lido is the first of five buildings slated for demolition in the coming days. The project, carried out by Io.Ca Costruzioni of Casal di Principe, was funded by the Campania Region with €300.
The five buildings join the 45 already demolished in the last three years. Among the structures demolished was a tourist village that, according to investigations, was used by the Belforte clan of Marcianise. A total of 180 illegal properties have been seized in the area over the last three years.
A complex operation, conducted in an area plagued for decades by organized crime and illegal construction. For Attorney General Aldo Policastro, however, the demolition represents only the first step.
"It demonstrates the importance of synergy between public institutions. As a judiciary, we are doing our duty by demolishing the buildings that a judge has ordered demolished, but in Castel Volturno, we need more than just demolition; we need above all to rebuild, regenerate, and redevelop an area with a wealth of untapped potential," Policastro stated.
The Attorney General then emphasized the need for new resources and projects that engage public administrations, the nonprofit sector, civil society, and entrepreneurs. "We will ask the Region to make a commitment to the future of this area, both politically and economically," Policastro added.
On the judicial front, the Public Prosecutor of Santa Maria Capua Vetere, Pierpaolo Bruni, recalled the work of the team of magistrates dedicated to the Castel Volturno events.
"Today's move is one of the steps we've been taking over the last three years. My office will continue to pay special attention to this troubled area," Bruni said.
Also present at the demolition were Caserta Prefect Lucia Volpe, provincial law enforcement officials, and representatives of the Coast Guard and the Campania Region. For Regional Councilor Cuomo, the restoration of legality represents the foundation for a new phase of redevelopment of the area.
"Restoring legality is the prerequisite for a further series of interventions that enhance the area, and which we will implement here in Castel Volturno," he declared. The past three years thus reveal a period of demolition, leading to the demolition of 50 structures. But the message from the institutions looks beyond the bulldozers: the stated objective is to transform the land reclamation into a process of urban, economic, and social regeneration.
