The Pozzano landslide
Castellammare – A roundtable meeting convened by Prefect Michele di Bari was held on the afternoon of Wednesday, October 1st, at the Government Palace in Naples to review the hydrogeological situation of Mount Faito following the landslides that struck the Pozzano area of the municipality of Castellammare di Stabia on September 25th.
The meeting focused on the urgent structural interventions needed to secure the slopes and streambeds in the area, which have been the scene of landslides and mudslides that have also affected the Pozzano tunnel and several city streets.
The meeting was attended, in addition to the prefect, by the councilor for Civil Protection of the Campania Region, Fiorella Zabatta (connected remotely), and representatives of the Municipality of Castellammare di Stabia, the Fire Brigade, the Metropolitan City of Naples, the Southern Apennines District Basin Authority, the Monti Lattari Regional Park Authority and the Police Forces.
The joint presence of all the institutional and technical bodies involved confirms the desire to coordinate responses to hydrogeological risks in an area historically critical for the disruption and maintenance of water collection channels.
During the summit, a joint strategy was defined for the hydrogeological management of the Monte Faito streambeds, located on the Sorrento Peninsula. The interventions will specifically concern the following streams:
For these works, €10 million has already been allocated and made available, coming from the 2010 CIPE funds dedicated to hydrogeological risk. The Municipality of Castellammare di Stabia has also completed the preparation of the related tender, thus unblocking the procedural process after years of delays related to resolutions, projects, and price increases.
In parallel with the structural plan, the municipal administration has already begun the first emergency operations on the Scurolillo stream and the streams most affected by the recent landslides. The ongoing activities include:
These operations are part of a transitional phase, preparatory to a comprehensive and specialized project that will be agreed upon shortly with the Campania Region. The goal is to ensure initial safety measures as quickly as possible, pending the final interventions funded by CIPE (Interministerial Economic Planning Committee) funds.
The institutions have reiterated their continued vigilance regarding the situation, ensuring continuous and constant monitoring of the area to ensure public safety. Civil Protection operations remain active on the ground, while technical inspections of slopes and water drainage channels continue.
