Internal medicine meets in Rimini at the SIMI Congress

Rimini – Patients are increasingly elderly, frail, and suffering from multiple pathologies. This is the challenge at the heart of the 127th National Congress of the Italian Society of Internal Medicine (SIMI), which opens today at the Palacongressi in Rimini. The three-day conference will feature 56 scientific sessions, the presentation of over 700 abstracts, keynote lectures, roundtable discussions, and workshops. Topics include the main pathologies of interest in internal medicine, multimorbidity, frailty, chronicity, and the need for integrated care.

"Complexity is one of the defining characteristics of the internal medicine patient today and, at the same time, represents one of the main challenges for our healthcare system," confirms SIMI President Nicola Montano. Internal medicine, he continues, must bring together diverse skills, interpret the diversity of clinical needs, and develop truly personalized care pathways.

The National Congress therefore represents "a key opportunity to share the latest evidence, discuss innovations, and discuss organizational transformations affecting the national healthcare system." Following this afternoon's institutional panel discussion "The Intensity of Care in Internal Medicine: From Outpatient to Semi-Intensive Care," featuring speakers including Walter Bergamaschi, tomorrow, Saturday, October 3rd, there will be a focus on the DAMA (Disabled Advanced Medical Assistance) model, which, reversing the traditional paradigm, sees the hospital and its organization adapt to the vulnerable patient.

Among the events, there's also space for the more human dimension of the profession, with the Creative Writing Contest promoted in collaboration with the Scuola Holden. Aimed at internists, the project has collected approximately 100 submissions that reflect the more human dimension of the specialist through the recounting of experiences with patients and the more intimate aspects of the internist's work.

The awards ceremony is today, while tomorrow will see the SIMI International Award, presented to Richard Horton, editor of the medical journal The Lancet, and the SIMI Solidarity Award, presented to the Papa Giovanni XXIII Community. The Congress also recognizes the work of young internists with the SIMI Young Researchers Awards, named after Giuseppe Licata, Mario Condorelli, and Alberto Malliani, and with awards for the best oral presentations and best posters during the closing ceremony of the Congress on Sunday, October 4th.

Simicura.it is also presented, the company's new portal dedicated to medical-scientific dissemination and authoritative, accessible and reliable health information.

The Congress, Montano concludes, aims to be "first and foremost a space for discussion, sharing, and shared growth," where research, training, innovation, and quality care can interact and contribute to building an Internal Medicine "increasingly prepared to address the transformations of medicine and society."
