The truck on fire
A judicial investigation will determine the cause of the accident that killed Domenico Paladino, a 59-year-old truck driver from Cava de' Tirreni. He died yesterday afternoon on the A2 Mediterranean motorway, near the Sicignano degli Alburni exit, while traveling northbound.
According to an initial reconstruction, still being examined by investigators, the heavy vehicle struck the guardrail on the left side of the road, lost control and broke through the viaduct's protections.
The cabin fell several dozen meters, crashing to the ground; after the impact, the truck caught fire. The causes of the loss of control remain unclear: illness or distraction are among the possible causes, but there is currently no evidence to confirm either.
Traffic police officers from Eboli and Sala Consilina responded to the scene, conducting surveys and investigations. Investigators will reconstruct the sequence of events and verify any evidence that might help clarify why the truck crashed into the barriers. No other vehicles were involved in the impact.
The vehicle was carrying a load of cherries. During the accident, the trailer overturned, ending up sideways on the roadway, while the cab fell under the viaduct. Part of the vehicle and its load remained on the highway, complicating operations and traffic management.
The body was seized and made available to the judicial authorities. This step is also part of the investigations ordered to reconstruct the incident.
Firefighters from the Eboli detachment, supported by the headquarters' crane, 118 paramedics, and law enforcement, arrived at the scene of the accident. Rescuers worked both on the roadway and in the area beneath the viaduct.
Anas closed the northbound stretch of road for several hours, requiring a mandatory exit at Petina and a return to Campagna. The fire and debris also required repairs to restore the roadway.
Paladino's death comes just days after that of two workers originally from the Vallo di Diano, who died in separate work-related accidents in Irpinia and Sannio.
