Santa Maria La Fossa – An extraordinary inspection operation has uncovered serious irregularities at a food processing and marketing company in Santa Maria la Fossa, in the province of Caserta. The raid, launched yesterday, October 8th, involved Carabinieri officers from the Grazzanise station, supported by members of the Labor Inspectorate (NIL), the Environmental Operations Unit (NOE), and inspection personnel from the Caserta Local Health Authority.
The employment impact is severe. During the inspection, nine employees were identified at the company; seven of them were found to have no valid employment contracts. The inspection also uncovered alleged workplace safety violations, including a failure to conduct risk assessments, neglected health surveillance, and a lack of adequate training for employees.
8 quintals of food and illegal waste seized
The military and local health authority (ASL) controls then extended to public safety and territorial protection. In the food sector, approximately eight quintals of products were seized due to complaints about improper storage.
Critical issues were also found on the environmental front: investigations into wastewater management prompted the Carabinieri of the NOE to order the criminal seizure of a sealed tank and a pipe that discharged liquids directly into an adjacent irrigation canal.
Complaints and sanctions
Upon completion of the activities, the company's legal representative was charged. He will be held accountable for the alleged environmental and food crimes, as well as for workplace safety violations. A second individual was also charged for alleged violations of the regulations governing entry and residence in Italy.
The financial measures issued against the company amount to 35.580 euros in administrative sanctions (including the maximum sanction for undeclared work) and 8.827,80 euros in criminal fines.
It should be noted that the proceedings are currently in the preliminary investigation phase. The responsibility of the suspects must be determined and confirmed in court.
