Naples – First heart transplant in the new department at Monaldi Hospital in Naples. Less than 24 hours after the ribbon-cutting ceremony, the new Heart Transplant and Innovative Procedures in Cardiac Surgery department at Monaldi Hospital in Naples is now fully operational, successfully recording the 17th transplant of 2026.
The new department was inaugurated on Wednesday morning in the presence of Anna Iervolino, Director General of the Colli Hospital, Loredana Raia, President of the 5th Health and Social Security Commission of the Campania Regional Council, and Massimiliano Manfredi, President of the Campania Regional Council.
The young patient had been treated at Monaldi Hospital for approximately three months, waiting for a compatible organ for transplant. This operation—according to the hospital—represents the first operational result of the new department, which will now accommodate the man in a dedicated intensive care unit, where he will be subjected to careful clinical monitoring during the delicate post-operative phase.
The care pathway will continue within the new facility, with multidisciplinary care that will accompany the young patient through all phases of the transplant process, from post-operative management to rehabilitation and follow-up. Cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, and internists, each with their own expertise, will collaborate seamlessly to ensure continuity of care, constant monitoring, and a personalized treatment plan.
With the start of operations and the first heart transplant performed, the new department confirms its usefulness and vocation for highly specialized and multidisciplinary care, strengthening Monaldi's commitment to the care of complex cardiac patients and the treatment of transplant recipients.
"Results like this," Iervolino emphasizes, "are only possible thanks to a cohesive, competent, and deeply dedicated team. My thanks go to all the professionals—doctors, nurses, healthcare workers, and technical and administrative staff—who every day, with commitment, professionalism, and a spirit of service, contribute to ensuring our patients receive the best possible care. It is thanks to this wealth of expertise and humanity that we can address increasingly complex challenges and continue to offer concrete solutions to citizens' healthcare needs."
